Planning to visit Paris and want to feel like a native? Renting an apartment in the non-touristy part of town will do just that.
This spacious, one-bedroom 800 sq.ft. apartment is located one block from the Pont Mirabeau in the heart of Auteuil, one of the most elegant neighborhoods of Paris, often considered a village in itself. The main street, the rue d’Auteuil, has a twice-weekly outdoor market, several restaurants, boutiques, and shops where you’ll find everything you need for a comfortable stay. Two local supermarkets and two local organic stores even deliver your groceries, and you’re a 5-min drive from the Boulevard Extérieure if you decide to rent a car for a weekend getaway. A 15-minute walk brings you to the renowned Roland Garros tennis stadium, home of the French Open, and the lush, 2000-acre Bois de Boulougne, where you can wander or bike to your heart’s content. The nearest metro stop is Mirabeau on line 10, less than a one-minute walk from the apartment, and bus #72, also one minute from the apartment, spirits you to the Louvre and the Hotel de Ville in less than 20 mins. The apartment is located on the 5th floor (6th floor USA) with an elevator and overlooks gardens on all sides. It is protected with an outside digicode, ground-floor intercom and a gardienne who lives on the premises.
Description: The rooms are large, airy, and sunny. The living room is comfortable and open, with two large couches and an armchair. The couches can be used for occasional overnight guests with linen supplied to fit. Just off the living room in an alcove is the office space where you can choose to work with a laptop, print anything necessary, or just send off the occasional email. The bedroom is spacious and comfortable, with a queen-size bed that has a state-of-the-art mattress. Double-glazed windows ensure no cold drafts in the winter, less warm air in the summer and practically no street noise. The dining room table seats four comfortably and expands to six, should you decide to host a dinner party. The bathroom has a walk-in shower and several different shower nozzles. The kitchen is large enough for two people to cook and has all the convenient appliances: washer, separate dryer, dishwasher, coffee maker, electric kettle, toaster, blender, toaster oven, microwave, all utensils and tableware you might need to cook and/or host. (The twice-weekly market is a real incentive!) I spend a lot of personal time in Paris and have loaded the apartment up with all the creature comforts I enjoy in America, especially in the kitchen, where I do a lot of cooking. There is an abundance of closet space, offering plenty of storage for your belongings and suitcases.
Other amenities:
- All bed linen (sheets, towels, blankets, etc) supplied.
- Utilities are included for all rentals (water, electricity, heat, wifi, telephone, television)
- Fully equipped kitchen contains washer, separate dryer, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, coffee machine, electric kettle, blender, convection oven, toaster oven. Iron with ironing board, hair dryer (and flat iron & curling iron!) also available for guests’ use.
- Unlimited telephone calls within France as well as to the US, Canada, and all of western Europe from the land line; free wireless internet connection. Printer/copier/scanner available (guests supply HP ink cartridges, #301 HP).
- Radio/MP3/CD player with docking system for iPod; cable TV with several English & French channels as well as Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.; DVD player; clock radio in bedroom; small bluetooth speaker to better diffuse music played from your phone.
Advantages: Renting an apartment, particularly in Auteuil, will allow you to savor French life and culture more fully. It affords you more leisure time and more flexibility, and you can even practice your rusty French if you so desire at the local boulangerie up the street where you’ll buy the most delicious croissants Paris has to offer, or shop at the twice-weekly marché and cook your own meals. There are three different supermarkets within a 5-minute walk to buy your groceries. The organic grocery store Biocoop is just up the street, as are a couscous restaurant, a sushi restaurant, a pizza restaurant, and a couple of cafés. If you don’t speak any French, no problem: the shopkeepers are happy to accommodate with their limited English.
You’re within a 10-minute metro ride on line 10 of the heart of Paris, and bus line 72—only a block away—spirits you directly from the apartment to the Hotel de Ville in 20 minutes, with stunning views of the Seine and the Eiffel Tower along the way. You can even walk to the Eiffel Tower in 25 minutes, or take a lovely nature walk on the Ile des Cygnes right in the middle of the Seine, 10 minutes away. You’re out of the tourist zone of the center of town, away from the hoards of Americans who crowd the 6th and 7th arrondissements and the Marais; you’re living in le vrai Paris.
Trip cancellation insurance: I strongly recommend the purchase of trip cancellation insurance. For a relatively small sum, you can protect your investment (and mine!) in case something unexpected should come up which would prevent you from traveling to Paris. If you have aging parents, children, grandchildren, any medical concerns…to say nothing of an unforeseen accident…your trip is protected against loss. There are several trip cancellation insurance companies on the market. One I have worked with in the past, which has been very receptive of guests who are not able to go at the last minute, is CSA Travel Insurance (now affiliated with Generali.) If you choose them, cite Producer Code 71636881.
Currency: Payment is in US Dollars. Guests with currency other than US dollars are requested to do a bank transfer and/or Paypal deposit if they are unable to send a check in US dollars; all bank and Paypal charges are incurred by the guest, as are the postal charges for the keys to countries outside the US.
References: I have a long list of very satisfied guests and a faithful clientele who return to the apartment year after year. I’d be happy to share their names and emails upon request, as they have often volunteered to tell others about their serendipitous find in Auteuil.
Rental procedure: Feel free to call with any questions or concerns, as I am a former French teacher and an avid Francophile. If you feel the apartment is appropriate for you, I’ll be happy to check the reservation schedule. If available, I will ask for a $200 security deposit and 50% of the rent to secure your choice of dates; balance is due one month before your visit. Once received, I mail you the keys so that you can arrive at your leisure. A cleaning fee of 80,00 E is required at the end of your stay, left in cash on the table for the housekeeper. The security deposit is returned to you when I have received the keys back from you and the green light from the housekeeper, approximately two weeks after your visit. Thank you for considering chez moi à Paris!
